We spent four nights here in April and wish it could have been longer. Being driven in a Shikara cruise crossing the Dal Lake to Kolu Houseboat was already an experience. But what struck me most was the warmth of our welcoming hosts, Mr Nazir A. Kolu on his uniquely designed houseboat, we enjoy the homeliness of our luxurious accommodation and the beauty of the surrounding area. Every rooms and bathrooms are clean and comfortable, the setting is just beautiful. The service was excellent, ensuring we had what we needed. Yes, they have WIFI connection too.
And to top it all, we enjoy sitting together with Papa Nazir and shared the wonderful homemade cuisine, barbecues and Kashmir tea which are the crucial things that you should try. Papa Nazir is so friendly and informative in provide his valuable insight into an array of topics ranging from farming, local customs, religion to politics. We even learnt a few Kashmir songs from him. Funny!
Here, you get a true privilege to see some real taste of Kashmir life and culture. Small, friendly villages paddled around the lake, going about their daily rituals and chores lets you sample some beautiful scenery while living like a local in this Houseboat. It is very tranquil and relaxing to see the sunset in the evening.

We had a great holiday completed by a wonderful stay in a beautiful Kolu boathouse. The stationary boathouse is parked on the opposite of the river, a good breakaway from the hustle and bustle of the town. The boathouse is reachable only by Shikara which a small boat rowed by man. We have sat for hours in the balcony mesmerised by the beautiful scenery. The big living hall and the 3 bedrooms are lavishly furnished in Kashmirian style, very unique indeed! We stayed in the second room which has a queen size bed and 1 single bed complete with a clean attached bathroom. There is a friendly and helpful |butler| to serves us and the foods are simply delicious. Many thank to Mr Hilal, Mr Nazir and all the staff for giving us a memorable and wonderful stay. I enjoyed my stay at Kolu House Boats (Gulrose) and liked the amenities in the houseboat .My stay was comfortable and the view from the front deck of the houseboat is excellent. Food was very hygenic and good .The behaviour of the workers and the overall feeling is of a very friendly cosy atmosphere. Shall definitely refer and recommend the same my friends.

I am a tourist agent from Bulgaria. I have visited Kolu Houseboats - 3 times, last time in April 2014. Me and my tourists were every time satisfied of our staying here. We have had the same case - the electricity cut off, the house keeper switch on the generator till 12 PM.
In the sitting room there was a firewood heater, and in the bedrooms - kerosin heaters. We receive as well a torch in every one room. The weather in Kashmir and electricity they couldn't control, but they gave to us good service and hospitality, and surprisingly - a birthday cake for one of the tourists. Yes, the rooms - they are not so light, because the walls are wooden, and the curtains - they are wool with handmade embroidery. We were here for 3 days and there was hot water on the morning and on the evening. To stay in Kashmir on the houseboat - that is a special kind of experience, and it's worth every one minute.
